The Story of Totem

Steve & Jamey, Owners

The Story of Totem begins with two strangers who both decided to leave their hometowns and move to Asheville, NC. Jamey Stradling and his family left the funeral business in 2011 and headed south from his hometown of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, to settle down in the Haw Creek neighborhood of Asheville, North Carolina. The same year, Steve Spitzer left his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, to live with friends in West Asheville and work as a butcher at Greenlife (which is now the downtown Whole Foods). They soon thereafter were introduced through mutual friends and quickly became family, sharing holidays, good times, and fun vacations.

Fast forward a couple years and Jamey and Steve found themselves working together learning the trade of stone masonry, building stone walls and learning the hands-on details of stonework and hardscaping. The next several years brought landscaping and hardscaping jobs of all kinds, giving them valuable experience in everything from operating heavy machinery to handcrafting stone retaining walls to creating unique “gemscape” water features. The partners soon discovered an affinity for creating artistic stone installations, such as pathways, staircases, and perennial garden beds, and Totem Rocks & Landscaping, LLC was born.

Jamey and Steve take pride in their work and stand behind a strong business code of ethics. Totem and all of the hardworking folks who contribute to its success are proud to be Asheville-local, American Made, family-owned, and non-discriminatory. Give Totem a call, we look forward to discussing your landscaping needs!
